Quick Overview

"February- The Hunts of Maximillian" is recreated after the original royal hunt tapestry.

Description

"February- The Hunts of Maximillian" is recreated after the original royal hunt hangings from the Dermoyen workshop designed by Bernard van Orley. Here we see the end of a hunt in front of King Modus (measure, or practice) and Queen Ratio (reason, or theory). The idea of the scene being that hunting should exercise the stamina and self-control of the aristocracy. The whole scene is presided over by a statue of the goddess Diana, patron goddess of hunting. Diana is also the goddess of water and as such, we see a battle of sea-monsters in the lower border. Behind the aristocratic hunting party is a view of the balienhof, the square in front of the ducal palace in Brussels.
