“Pagoda with Red Drapery” is recreated after “Landscape with Pagoda” from the Chinese Landscape series woven at Aubusson in the second quarter of the 18th century. In this scene we see stone steps carved straight into rock that lead to a plateau on which rise the steps of a three-tiered pagoda. A second set of steps continues to the narrow entrance, which is framed by ionic columns. A river follows beneath the pagoda an arch or a cavern. Fantastic birds animate the scene and although there is no human presence, there is a bow and quiver in the left foreground that implies human activity. The bow and quiver hang before a little shelter, semi concealed by rich red drapery.Learn More -
