Vintage Savonnerie style rug hand woven in India circa1920 . Savonnerie carpets have been produced since the 1600’s. The name comes from the French word for soap, ‘savon’ as they were produced in an area where soap factories were based. The designs are mainly, pictorial or armorial and the rugs are normally woven with a thick plush pile. Later, carpets of this kind were made in other European centers, most notably in Spain and more recently in China and India.
