Quick Overview

Antique French Aubusson Circa 1890

Description

A difficult to find square Aubusson, with a wonderful composition. The central ivory medallion enclosed in a swirl of soft rose colored vines all surrounded by a glorious border in soft greens with four splendid spandrels with a floral theme. Situated on the banks of the River Creuse in France Aubusson had been well known for producing tapestries for centuries. It is claimed that they were weaving in Aubusson as early as the 8th century but it was not until 1743 when the Kings Council decided to establish a carpet factory in the town that the style we now know as Aubusson came into being.
