A lovely antique Tabriz circa 1900 rug with the design so typical of this area. The three layered medallion has an arabesque edging and is filled with various palmettes, curved leaves and scrolling, wiry vines. This activity is continued in the matching corners. The border takes off from 16th century sources with a thick strapwork connecting pointed ogival ellipses. As with all Tabriz rugs of this quality, the foundation is all cotton with a short, erect pile, all the better to display the crisply elaborate drawing.
