Antique Kashan Mohtashem circa 1880. Mohtashem signifies the name of the master weaver whose works belong at the top of the highest category of rugs. In the later 19th century carpet weaving was revived by Hajji Mollah Hasan Mohtashem, employing Australian Merino wool spun in Manchester, England, to make velvety, finely knotted, mostly medallion rugs. The colors are slightly mellow and the carpets highly desirable.
