Antique Caucasian Karabagh Rug with Bird Design Circa 1880. Across the Aras river from Karajeh is the Armenian Caucasian rug area of Karabagh (Black Garden) which wove scatters, runners and gallery rugs from the 17th century onwards, often with cochineal reds and violets as significant tones. This is a very unusual rug with wonderfully woven birds depicted in the central filed four times and most probably would have been woven by special order. The detail of the birds and the enclosing multiple borders is of the highest quality and signifies the skills of the weaver.
